“We have got to get the devil out of this atmosphere so that we can break through the second heaven…”
I can’t tell you how many times that I have gotten up at a church service and began by combating the devil. One Sunday morning while in the middle of my warfare ritual I heard the Lord ask, “Are you finished?” This question from the Lord caught me off guard and let me know that I was about to be schooled.
We spend an unhealthy amount of time giving deliberate attention to the ways of the enemy and forsake to give that same attention to the ways of God. The Church has become well versed in being able to recognize, name, and give detailed information on demons but is clueless regarding the angels of Lord.
The Lord began to teach me about our rank as sons and daughters and the superiority of the government that we stand under in His kingdom. Jesus had no need to exert His efforts by chasing the demons of the cities He entered. The superiority of the government that He carried demanded that they submit. I am not disregarding the place and purpose of intercession, but I am emphasizing the awakening of sonship.
“When He has disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.” – Col. 2:15
In the context of this passage Paul is admonishing the people not to be drawn back into fleeting thoughts of present day philosophers, the old traditions of men, and the elementary principles. The old and elementary things that Paul is referencing here is the Old Covenant that existed prior to the Cross. This is also reemphasized in Galatians 3:24 which states, “Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.” Now that Christ has come the old has passed away and all things have become new.
The enemy capitalized on the law which awakened sin in our members (Rom. 5:13), thus causing us to war against ourselves and remain broken in our perception regarding our relationship with God. Christ through fulfilling the Law Covenant disarmed the enemy and ushered us into a new identity with greater glory. He openly defeated and triumphed over the enemy. When He triumphed, we were present in Him. Within that triumph was the ascension of mankind into the heavenly realm (Eph. 2:6) far above principalities and powers.
There are three initial truths that the Holy Spirit revealed to me that changed my view of God, His children, and the authority we have over the enemy.
Let’s take a look:
- We stand under God’s government.
When in the court of law, when the judge enters the room everyone stands, looks up to the governing desk and honors his/her presence and acknowledges that they live under that government. In addition, one that acknowledgement has been made the judge sits and so does the occupants of the room. The first person that we engage reveals which government we deem to be most authoritative in our lives. Jesus lived with a constant gaze upon the Father. The only time that Jesus spoke to the devil was when the devil addressed Him first. The government of God rests upon the shoulders of Jesus (Is. 9:6), and as His body we stand under that government. The rule of God’s government super rules over that of the enemy.
The enemy is aware of the ignorance that exists within the Church as it pertains to our ranking as sons and daughters, thus he capitalizes on our ignorance. The truth is that your life is hidden (concealed, covered, and kept a secret) in Christ (Col. 3:3). The only thing that exposes the believer in spiritual warfare is ignorance. The goal of the enemy is to win the gaze of our heart, for that is the essence of worship. The New Covenant has come to announce that we have authority over all of the power of the enemy! It’s time that we leverage the grace that has been given to us.
